What would the English counter-part of an Arabic script look like? Refuge is an ornamental serif designed to be the voice of my father’s Urdu poetry. The ornamental border on the specimen cover is made purely with punctuation from the typeface. The gently curved serifs mimic a calligraphic approach, yet the contrast between the stems adds a modern look. My first attempt at ‘Type Design’, far from perfect, but serving a purpose (translating the poetry book in English) I had been pondering for very long.
